Infirm effect of phylogeny on morphometric features in a cryptic Gobio species complex

Abstract Several recent notes prove that taxonomic relations of close relative animal groups (species complexes or cryptic species) can be revealed by the combined use genetic and morphologic methodologies. At same time scarce information found about how phylogeny, population origin, sexual dimorphism affect morphometric features these species. In our present work, we performed simultaneous phylogenetic morphological studies on taxonomically still questionable Carpathian stream dwelling gudgeons (Cyprinidae, Gobio ) using two different methodologies (distance based geometric morphometry). Our results were in correspondence with previous findings, showing presence three phylogenetically more less distinct area. The whole-body traditional, distance-based morphometry reflected extent differences. While scale did not correspond subdivisions. Results way PERMANOVA analyses showed effects is considerable as origin at cyprinid taxa. investigation contributed to better understanding taxonomy fish stocks Basin, their conservation, but additional investigations will needed clarify exact position (’ sp1’) dominating eastern part studied drainage.
